A nationwide upgrade to China's departure tax refund policy took effect on July 1, making shopping easier for overseas visitors and boosting inbound spending.

At Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and other ports in Guangdong, eligible travelers can now complete tax refund procedures without unpacking their luggage. Customs officers verify purchases by scanning a QR code. Under the new policy, purchases worth less than 10,000 yuan are subject to random physical inspections, while those worth 10,000 yuan or more still require full inspection.

The updated policy also introduces paperless processing, expands tax refund services, and increases the number of participating stores. On July 1, Guangzhou opened its fourth tax refund center at Buynow Guangzhou in Tianhe District, where travelers can access one-stop instant in-store tax refund services.
