On March 25, construction began on Guangzhou's new airport in Gaoming District, Foshan, about 60 km southwest of central Guangzhou and within an hour of major cities including Foshan, Zhaoqing, and Jiangmen. The project aims to improve air connectivity across western Guangdong, serving over 20 million residents and reducing travel times to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
The project was first proposed in 2013 by six cities seeking to address limited airport capacity in the western side of Pearl River Delta. After years of studies, meteorological assessments, and approvals, the plan received final clearance in late 2025.
The airport will feature two parallel runways, a 260,000-square-meter terminal, 94 aircraft stands, and supporting facilities, designed to handle 30 million passengers and 500,000 tons of cargo annually.
It will function as an air-rail transport hub, linking the operational Guangzhou-Zhanjiang High-Speed Rail, the under-construction Shenzhen-Nanning line, and under planning intercity and airport express services.
The airport is also expected to stimulate regional economic growth, supporting logistics, advanced manufacturing, and aviation-related industries. Officials say it will serve as a shared hub for western Guangdong cities, enhancing connectivity, regional integration, and development opportunities.
